If we want to Homeschool in Houston, where do we even start?

Houston Public Library Flip Kit at Table
This is a question I get a lot… and I would also like to know the answer!  Fortunately the BigKidSmallCity.com community is full of experts that are nice enough to share their knowledge!  Below are resources to get you started with Homeschooling in Houston.

Thanks to Amy H, Kimberly R, Pat S, Nicole W, Kyla H, Sarah C!

  • A great place to start is with the Texas Home School Coalition.  You can learn about the laws and watch a series of videos on what to consider before homeschooling, and how to start.  There are also a couple THSC Homeschool Conventions coming up.
  • Find a Homeschooling Group in your area.  They are a huge source of information and resources.  Some suggestions:
  • Private Co-Ops allow kids to attend a “school” a couple days a week and to teach at home the rest of the week.  One recommendation is to find your own groove with homeschooling first before committing to a co-op.
  • For more information on curriculums, check out 102 Homeschool Curriculums to help match your teaching style to your child’s learning styles.

      Kim –

I think the Texas Home School Coalition is a good place to start. I’ll ask the group for more ideas in the Crosby area too.

Baytown Secular Homeschoolers Chat on FB. There’s a co-op too, find out more about it there.
Also, Houston Freethinking Homeschoolers’ name has been changed to Houston Secular Homeschoolers. Check us out!!

Another useful resource is http://houston.areahomeschoolclasses.com, which lists various co-ops, classes, and programs for homeschool families in the Houston area.

I noticed your post. I applaud you for learning about home school curriculum and support groups. You probably have a good idea about Texas requirements for homeschooling by now. I know several families who home school in this city. I thought this site would be helpful http://www.a2zhomeschooling.com for someone new. It is the list of groups in Houston by area.

Thanks for this post! There are so many homeschoolers and very few very good resources. You are the first page that comes up when I look for things! I would love to see you really dive into the issue even more — where are there classes (at least centrally, but maybe by region). In Houston, there are arboretum, glassel, art school on the boulevard, zoo, etc classes during the homeschool day (which usually means not saturdays/sundays to homeschool families who tend to keep their weekends open). But there are more, and they’re so hard to find. There are a whole bunch of pages that are otu of date online, with links to groups that no longer exist. I’d love to be able to point people here because we already love your site for thorough info.
