At BigKidSmallCity, we believe the more we know about the people of Houston, the smaller our city feels. And who better to meet than a Houston mom that is an expert on what to do in Humble and Houston, with kids?!

Meet Janie Selph of Fun2Go Misters! In her own words, she tells us about her family, her online resource and what she likes about Houston!

Two Misters with a furry sister, a dad that joins our shenanigans on occasion and a mom seeking family adventures is the crew behind Fun2Go Misters. I was born and raised in Liberty, Texas and lived in the rural area most of my life. A couple of years after meeting and then marrying my husband, Josh Selph a Houston native, we decided that a fair compromise to raise our new blended family would be in Humble, Texas.

    Janie Selph's Fun2Go Misters
My 2 Misters are my son Javier, often referred to as Big Mister (13 years old) and then our Little Mister, Jacob, born just a couple of days after his brother’s birthday 9 years later. Earlier this year, Anniepoo, the furry sister, came into our lives and she has become a part of our outings when pets are allowed. The Misters love to have their maltipoo along for the ride and she has become an active topic on our social pages.

Living in a small town with limited venues to explore, I felt that I needed to see beyond our city limits and venture onto the outskirts with my first son. Back then, the internet wasn’t even available in most locations and not as easily accessible as it is now. The local library, Humble and Houston newspapers were our information sources in our quest to fulfill our thirst for adventure. Our days consisted of long drives, meeting new people and socializing with families in nearby towns to share information about venues and activities. I was determined to socialize my son and expose him to as many possible activities we could fit into our schedule.

Joining Meetup.com and creating a group, increased our networking and we soon had a large group of NE Houston Moms and Kids. The group was growing steadily, but after the Chronicle featured an article about the group, it spiked even more interest from moms in Humble, Spring and Houston generating an abundance of successful play dates and group outings.

Fast forward several years later. After moving to Humble in 2009, adjusting to our new blended family and starting all over with a baby, I was just as devoted to dedicate time for outings and reliving the toddler years with the new Little Mister as I once did with Big Mister. The advantages with my second Mister were that I was closer to Houston, I kept a few of my old planners to use as a guide and the internet is such a great vehicle for almost every aspect of our techy lives.

With social media creating an easier outlet to socialize, my neighbors would comment on my posts or pictures and soon my personal pages on Facebook and Instagram would become a Q&A platform about our outings, future plans, suggestions, sharing my photos, venue opinions and so forth.

I created the Facebook page Fall Creek’s Toddler Fun2Go to publicly provide helpful information to Fall Creek moms. Suddenly, moms outside of Fall Creek began “liking” the page and outgrew it’s targeted fan base. I revamped the page and titled it Fun2Go Misters on Facebook and Instagram. There are categorized albums organized by months, making it easier to view the upcoming events. These are the same albums I personally use myself for our outings. The albums are created from online research, social sites sharing their information, posts moms make in groups, wonderful sites such as BigKidSmallCity and planners from previous years.

We favor so many places in Houston, just depends which one of us is making the choice for the day. As far as my Big Mister (Javier), his favorite part of Houston is eating at Hibachi grills, he is a bit of a foodie. The Little Mister (Jacob) would be interested in visiting the Fire Museum in Houston any day, but for a combo location which offers something for both since they are 9 years apart, any indoor trampoline center is their favorite place in any part of Houston. During the Fall season, we take on an ambitious bucket list, fill our free days venue hopping and visiting as many farms as possible! We love visiting the various farms and they have become a part of our annual Fall planning.

I guess you could say that I have always had a passion for Houston’s endless amenities for active families and even though it has been ongoing for years, there is still so much more ground to cover.

The Facebook page is more information, but if you would like to peak into a little more of my Misters’ shenanigans, follow us on Instagram.
