The Advantages of Teaching Your Children Karate

by Jill Jarvis 1 Comment

A post contributed by Catherine West!  We have been looking for a youth martial arts class, and it looks like The Little Gym offers karate!

The Little GymWe live in a culture where it seems like everything in our lives glorifies violence. As such, you may think that enrolling your children in karate classes is not such a good idea. However, karate courses offer many fantastic benefits to children as we will examine here.

Physical Fitness

It is unfortunate that many children today spend much of their time indoors watching television, playing video games or spending time on a computer. As a result, they often end up out of shape and overweight. However, enrolling them in karate courses can help to get them off of the couch and encourage them to become active.

Physical fitness is a crucial element of karate. When you enroll your kids in karate classes, they will be involved in many beneficial exercises including stretches, jumping jacks and push-ups. These exercises will help strengthen their muscles and hearts.

Self-Defense

Women and young children are the most common victims of abuse and harassment. You can help your kids protect themselves by allowing them to take karate lessons. In today’s world, the ability to defend yourself is an essential skill, and karate will teach your children to protect themselves in a variety of situations.

Self-Confidence

When people feel good about themselves, they are often much happier and much more satisfied with life as a whole. This goes for your children as well. Whenever your children win during karate competitions or when they earn new belts, they will be proud, and their self-worth will increase. Their feelings of accomplishment will have long-lasting benefits.

Socialization Skills

It is important for your children to be able to get along with their peers. However, this can be quite hard for some kids, especially those who are shy or who lack self-esteem. Since karate helps build self-confidence, your children will find that making friends will be much easier.

Furthermore, they will be training alongside many different kinds of people who have various cultures and backgrounds. All of these children have one thing in common, and that is karate. As such, it will be much easier for your kids to socialize with people they meet in their lives.

Setting and Achieving Goals

It is never too early to learn how to set goals and how to achieve them. Karate will teach your children to have objectives and aspirations. In this sport, there are belts of varying colors that signify different skill levels. As your children reach each new goal, they will receive new belts. Additionally, since we do not always win in life, your kids will learn how to have positive attitudes even if they do not reach the goals they establish.

Self-Discipline

If you are a parent, you probably already know that many children lack self-discipline. Karate will help your children learn this attribute by teaching them to focus on tasks. They will learn that rewards do not come from instant gratification, but through hard work and self-discipline.

These are just a few of the wonderful advantages of enrolling your kids in karate; there are many more benefits. If you would like to learn more about karate classes for your kids, contact The Little Gym today!

The Little Gym is a kid’s activity center. They teach children coordination, teamwork, and agility with their sports skills development classes.
