Summer 2012 Bucket List – How are we doing?

by Jill Jarvis Leave a Comment

Summer is in full swing and we’re working our way through our Bucket List. Here’s our status… we need to keep moving if we will complete the list by the time school starts!

Our list includes:

  • Take the Port of Houston Tour (Free)
    • Free tours are available every day but Monday. Check the schedule HERE. We’re still looking forward to this adventure.
  • Visit the Waugh Bridge Bat Colony at Dusk (Free)
    • DONE! Check HERE.
  • Visit the John C. Freeman Weather Museum (Free on Thursday Afternoons)
    • DONE! This was small but fun. It’s a good way to spend an hour. Our post will come soon.
  • Visit the Houston Fire Museum 10 times (Adults: $5.00, Seniors: $4.00, Children: $3.00, Infants under 2 are free, Free for members)
    •  1 down, 9 to go. We love this air conditioned playground.
  • Visit the Houston Zoo (Free first Tuesday afternoon of the month)
    • Not yet, but we’re excited to go try out the new splash pad!
  • Ride the Hermann Park Train and Pedal Boats ($3 each for train, $9 per boat)
    • Not yet, but soon!
  • Visit the Houston Museum of Natural Science (Free on Tuesday afternoons)
    • DONE! Joe can now tell you an awful lot about oil and how we get it out of the ground.
  • Visit the Asia Society (Free)
    • Not yet, but soon!
  • Visit the Children’s Museum of Houston (Free Thursday Evenings)
    • The Children’s Museum makes me tired. It is a fantastic museum, but it is SO BUSY. I do plan to go for the kids, but give me a few more weeks to build up my strength.
  • Ride METRORail to Market Square Park. (Free)
    • Not yet, but soon!
  • Play at the Discovery Green Splash Pad (Free)
    • Not yet, but soon!
  • Play at the Ervan Chew Park Splash Pad (Free)
    • DONE! Our post will come soon.
  • Complete the Houston Public Library Reading Program (Free)
    • We need to get moving on this! The good news, it is that it’s not hard to read 30 books to little kids. And once you log 30 books, you get:   One voucher for a free ticket to a Houston Astros game (children K-12); one free child’s ticket with the purchase of an adult Houston Rocket’s ticket; entered into a Grand Prize drawing for an iPod Touch (Ages 13+), a Nintendo 3DS, or a LeapFrog LeapPad Explorer Learning Tablet. Check HERE for details.
  • Read All the Books on the HISD “Name that Book” list (Free)
    • Okay, okay, we’ll get our act together. The good news is, we can read the HISD Name that Book list and count them towards the Library Reading Program.
  • Teach Brooke to Swim
    • We’re working on it. I’ll post a video when we’re swimming!

If you are making your own bucket list, be sure to check out the FREE Admission days at the Houston Museums HERE. To see the big list of free things to do in Houston, go HERE.

About Jill Jarvis

Jill Jarvis is the owner of JillBJarvis.com, a BigKidSmallCity.com and Things to Do in Houston, with Kids, blog!

She is the mom of 4 and started the website years ago... when she was tired of constantly cleaning up the same mess in the family room.

Another mom showed her that you could just go do fun things in Houston, without hours of planning.

This inspired the blog and changed everything about how she enjoyed life in Houston, with kids!

jill-jarvis-bigkidsmallcity-circle-300 Welcome!  JillBJarvis.com is the go-to blog for things to do in Houston with kids!  It is upbeat and dedicated to making our big city feel small.   START HERE!

On this website you will find a full list of Houston weekly events, things to do around the city, travel ideas and resources for parents.

I know just what it’s like to be overwhelmed by work, life and family. I spent a lot of years traveling for work, missing big milestones for my kids and feeling bad about everything.

I started this website to make a list of all the events happening around Houston and then pick one to enjoy with my kids. And instead of thinking of all the things I was missing, I started to enjoy the things we were doing together.

If you are a parent that is feeling overwhelmed by all the things you could be doing in Houston… please just use our weekly lists and daily posts as suggestions. Pick one thing to do with your family and intentionally ignore the rest!
