Same, Same but Different by Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw – Books for Kids to Read

by Felicia Leave a Comment

It’s Felicia! Today’s review is of Same, Same But Different by Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw.

When my second grader pulled out this book before school and said, “Mom. This is such a great book. It shows that people can be very different but really the same on the inside.” I knew I would review it today.

This story is about two pen pals that exchange letters, primarily pictures, and they discover that they both have a love for climbing trees, are learning to write the alphabet at school, and live in big cities.

They have all this in common even though they live an ocean apart from each other! The boys, Elliot and Kailash, correspond through gorgeous collages with cool fonts sharing facts about their countries, families, and activities.

Together they discover that they are “Same, Same but Different!” I love the snail mail, pen pal concept that this book shares, especially since we live in such a technological age where you can Skype and email at your whim.

I think this is a great book to explain to younger children that each home is different but there are always similar traits no matter the country or the culture. This book definitely opened up my Kinder girl’s mind that the world is a bigger place than she thought it to be and this book sparked enough interest that my second grader is finally sending her first pen pal letter tomorrow!

Go HERE to get it on Amazon. Or better yet, shop local and get it at Brazos Bookstore!

I know just what it’s like to be overwhelmed by work, life and family. I spent a lot of years traveling for work, missing big milestones for my kids and feeling bad about everything.

I started this website to make a list of all the events happening around Houston and then pick one to enjoy with my kids. And instead of thinking of all the things I was missing, I started to enjoy the things we were doing together.

If you are a parent that is feeling overwhelmed by all the things you could be doing in Houston… please just use our weekly lists and daily posts as suggestions. Pick one thing to do with your family and intentionally ignore the rest!
