Kids movies for $1, air conditioning & reasonable kids meals… at Alamo Drafthouse this summer!

by Jill Jarvis 4 Comments

Kids movies for $1, air conditioning and reasonable kids meals… this is what Alamo Drafthouse is offering this summer!

Alamo is the kind of theater where you order from a full menu during the movie. And with the kids movies, it’s nice for parents to be able to bring the family, not be absolutely quiet and find food the kids like… all for a reasonable price.

Each day this summer, at 10:00am, the Kids Camp tickets are just $1 – $3 (you pick the price!) and 100% of ticket sales will benefit the Katy Family YMCA and the D. Bradley McWilliams YMCA.

Alamo Drafthouse invited us out last week for the movie and to try the menu… and we were happy to oblige!

Alamo Drafthouse Kids Movies

We went to Curious George, ran in just before show time with our pre-purchased tickets, and found our menus at our seats. The kid’s menu has a lot of options… like turkey meatball sliders, chicken strips, ham sandwiches, lots of sides and desserts… but it is very easy to make selections in a hurry. For most of the menu, you just select one main dish, one side and one sweet for $7. If you prefer, you can order a la carte as well.

So, just before the movie started we ordered the ham and cheese sandwich, yogurt and Sour Patch Kids, the chicken strips, french fries and M&Ms… and from the a la carte menu… the cheese pizza ($6), kids popcorn ($3) and drinks ($2).

When the movie started, our food and drinks were delivered and we ate during the show!

Very rarely do I used photos that are not my own… but since the theater was so dark, here are pictures provided by Alamo. (I can assure you the food looked the same… just if you were wearing sunglasses.)

If you are looking for a $1 kids show, with a $3 popcorn… or a $7 meal, check out Alamo Drafthouse Kid’s Camp. You can see The Boxtorlls, The Dark Crystal, Horton Hears a Who, Babe, The Neverending Story, Shaun the Sheep, The Lego Movie and The Karate Kid! Or, look for more $1 movies in theaters around Houston, HERE!

$1 Kid Movies at Alamo Drafthouse, Benefiting Houston YMCA

by Jill Jarvis Leave a Comment

Alamo Draft House Sign in Vintage Park
Alamo Drafthouse had us out to the Kids Camp today… and it’s pretty great for 3 reasons:

  • First, it has well known movies you know will be appropriate for your kids.
  • Second, you can pick your price. Pay $1, $2 or $3 per ticket… which is a donation to the YMCA.
  • Third, my kids just learned about eating INSIDE the movie theater and cannot believe how great it is.

This week you can see Kung Fu Panda 2, next week’s it’s How to Train Your Dragon 2 and then it’s Follow that Bird. Go HERE for details.

At the Alamo Drafthouse, you buy your movie tickets and select assigned seats. Once sitting, you can order by writing your order or requests on note cards that the waiters pick up. There is an adult menu and kids menu… snacks, meals, drinks and desserts. If you need a refill, you just write it down.

The kids combo was $7, with fish sticks, fries, fruit and a drink. The kids pizza was $9. And I was very pleased to see the kids veggie and fruit plate, jam packed with celery, carrots, apples and bananas, for $6. (My youngest seems to be on a special diet… he’ll eat healthy things if they are raw and separated. So raw veggies are okay. If they are cooked, they are terrible. If they are in a stew, they might just be poison.)

So, we ate, we watched, we laughed and were surrounded by families. Some giggles and cries were no big deal… and probably every family had to run to the bathrooms at least once. There is something a little comforting about hanging with parents that are out in Houston, having fun with their kids.

If this looks good to you… be sure to head to Kids Camp before school starts (and it ends)!

Frankenweenie – Scary for 1 Kid, Entertaining for Another

by Jill Jarvis Leave a Comment

Frankenweenie is out now for the Halloween season. It’s a black-and-white stop motion-animated film, directed by Tim Burton. In the movie, Victor’s best friend (and dog) is brought back to life with science.

I took my 2 big kids (ages 5 and 3) on Saturday to the matinee. I had some concerns about how scary the film would be, but my kids were excited to see it, so we decided to give it a try.

For the 12:30pm show the theater only had a few other families, making it perfect for us. Brooke and Joe sat quietly during the show and were entertained by the movie. I don’t think the “got” that bringing a dog back from the dead is a little scary.

It was the last half hour when some animals were going wild in the film that Joe decided to close his eyes. He is my 5 year old and is my most sensitive kid.

Joe was not shaken, but kept his eyes shut until the end. Brooke, the 3 year old, was perfectly pleased to watch the action.

There is nothing gory or graphic in the film, so I think it is fine for kids. For super sensitive ones, you might want to save your money and stay home. For fearless kids like Brooke, go ahead and make it a Halloween outing!

For showtimes, go HERE.

The Muppets Movie

by Jill Jarvis Leave a Comment

Remember the Muppets? They have a new movie out for our kids. The Muppets Movie is now showing at many Houston locations.

My kids had never been to a full length movie before, but we decided to give it a shot last Friday at the 4:00 showing. The theater was not very full, which was nice because I wasn’t sure how our first movie would go.

Lucky for me, the movie was great. It held my 2 and 4 year old’s attention for the full 1 hour and 38 minutes, and the only sound I hear from them was when they were dancing in their chairs.
