This review is of The Incredible Book Eating Boy by Oliver Jeffers.
I love Oliver Jeffers and he is probably one of my favorite children’s authors. He has several books that my girls love but our very, very favorite by him is The Incredible Book Eating Boy. It’s about a boy, Henry, who loves books. He doesn’t love books the way you or I might, instead he loves to eats them and the faster that he eats them, the brighter he gets, to a point that he’s even smarter than his teacher.
Inspired by how he has learned so many new things so quickly, he begins to devour books at an alarming rate. With time, the pages and information gets jumbled up and the once brilliant Henry eventually is unable to answer even the simplest of math problems. Henry eventually becomes incapable of eating any more books like he once did and instead begins to love to read them. And in the end, every now and then, Henry allows himself a small bite of a flavorful book.
This book is very quirky and cute. They style that the author uses is AH-MAZING. He reuses pages from old books and then illustrates with paints and pencil. Several of Henry’s expressions are priceless and the actual bite out of the book is a nice touch. This book is definitely too awesome to pass over.
