Books for Kids to Read: Smile by Raina Telgemeier

Reading Smile on the Porch
This is Felicia! My girls, ages 7 and 5, and we love to read.

This review is of Smile by Raina Telgemeier.

If I could pull this book away from either of my girls, I could do a better job of reviewing it, but so far that has not happen. I absolutely have to be sure to hide this book when we have company so my girls will play with their friends. And I have to make sure that it gets evenly passed between them on car rides to and from school.

From what I can tell from over their shoulders, the illustrations are magnificent. Telgemeier really does a wonderful job bringing the characters to life!

Aylen, age 7, reviews it as: “It’s just great. It is about a girl who knocks out her front teeth and has to see lots of doctors in order to fix them. Her friends are not so nice to her and pull mean pranks on her. She then finds better friends that treat her well. She also is in an earthquake. And also, did you know that this is based on a true story? This picture in the back is of Raina! Read this book and you won’t be disappointed.”

I think that this book is geared more for tweens, and it may have some angst in the pages, but since both my girls cannot put it down and I love to see my 5 year old reading, I let them devour it every chance they get!

jill-jarvis-bigkidsmallcity-circle-300 Welcome!  JillBJarvis.com is the go-to blog for things to do in Houston with kids!  It is upbeat and dedicated to making our big city feel small.   START HERE!

On this website you will find a full list of Houston weekly events, things to do around the city, travel ideas and resources for parents.

I know just what it’s like to be overwhelmed by work, life and family. I spent a lot of years traveling for work, missing big milestones for my kids and feeling bad about everything.

I started this website to make a list of all the events happening around Houston and then pick one to enjoy with my kids. And instead of thinking of all the things I was missing, I started to enjoy the things we were doing together.

If you are a parent that is feeling overwhelmed by all the things you could be doing in Houston… please just use our weekly lists and daily posts as suggestions. Pick one thing to do with your family and intentionally ignore the rest!
