A Sick Day for Amos McGee by Philip C. Stead – Books for Kids to Read

by Felicia Leave a Comment

It’s Felicia! Today’s review is of A Sick Day for Amos McGee by Philip C. Stead.

I am absolutely crazy about books with pencil drawings and this book, by a husband wife team, has taken my love to next level with its graphite drawings and woodblock printings.

Your attention, as well as your child’s, will immediately be grabbed with the illustration on the cover and its warm colors. Amos McGee is the kindest, sweetest little old man who happens to be a zookeeper at an unusual zoo.

He reports to work on time and makes time to see each of his special friends at the zoo who look forward to his arrival each day. After racing the tortoise, playing chess with the elephant, sitting quietly with the penguin, reading bedtime stories to the owl, and lending a handkerchief to the rhino, Amos, makes his way home.

One day, Amos awakes with a cold and his friends patiently wait for his visit and when it never comes, they leave the zoo to investigate. Their trip reflects his bus ride home each day and takes up seven almost wordless pages. When they arrive at Amos’ home, where he is in bed, he claps with delight and the friends spend the day and night entertaining their sick friend.

Without doubt, this is one of the sweetest books that I have ever read! I am eagerly waiting this couple’s next collaboration!

It is timeless and should be on your kid’s personal library shelf in their room. I guarantee it is one that they will hunt down in the future to read to their own children!

Go HERE to get it on Amazon. Or better yet, shop local and head to Brazos Bookstore!

I know just what it’s like to be overwhelmed by work, life and family. I spent a lot of years traveling for work, missing big milestones for my kids and feeling bad about everything.

I started this website to make a list of all the events happening around Houston and then pick one to enjoy with my kids. And instead of thinking of all the things I was missing, I started to enjoy the things we were doing together.

If you are a parent that is feeling overwhelmed by all the things you could be doing in Houston… please just use our weekly lists and daily posts as suggestions. Pick one thing to do with your family and intentionally ignore the rest!
