Local Foods – Our Search for Houston’s Best Restaurants for Kids

Age Appropriate: 3 and up
Price: $-$$

We are reviewing a restaurant we talked about over a year ago, after it opened, and I am happy to say that Local Foods on Kirby and Westheimer has just blossomed and grown to a really delicious place to eat.

Local Foods Kirby Patio
The weather is finally becoming drier and less hot and Local Foods has one of the nicest patios in town. It is fenced in, had different corners with big tables for big families and smaller ones that feel cozy. The lightning is beautiful and the reason my pictures don’t show more of it is because it was very crowded!

Local Foods Kirby Booth
The dining room is still has welcoming and casual as last year. I actually like the fact that they haven’t changed much over a year and a half because it means they kept their vision and spirit. Local Foods wants to make good healthy fresh meals for you so you can eat a delicious sandwich without guilt!

Local Foods Salads
There is no kid menu but do not let that stop you! They have a delicious chicken sandwich that is sure to please everyone if your children don’t feel too adventurous! I love their options because they inspire me to try new things. Their sides, in particular, are very creative and appetizing.

Local Foods Kirby Sandwich and Noodles
My son chose the chicken sandwich on a pretzel bun with homemade chips (Mom tested and approved!!) with Soba Noodles with cucumbers and snow peas tossed in. Once he removed the salad – but kept the pickles – my son really enjoyed his meal and the chicken was really good.

Local Foods Sandwich and Soup
My husband opted for the shrimp and blue crab sandwich with a side of soup (red beans and rice) He really enjoyed the sandwich and let me have a bite! It was delicious and the crab was wonderful. My husband made a good point that they don’t offer classic comfort food but every time he chooses something, he loves it! Local foods creates new comfort food for us!

Local Foods Kirby Sandwich
I picked the Smoked Salmon sandwich on a poppy seed bagels with the quinoa salad and the cabbage slaw. The quinoa was smooth and tender mixed with lentils, cauliflower, tomato and walnut. It was well seasoned and I also really enjoyed the slaw that had a bit of a kick to it and both complemented my sandwich. I absolutely adore smoked salmon and this one is house smoked and there was plenty on the bagel to be savory and satisfying.

They also offer yummy treats for desserts but we didn’t get one that evening! We will definitively come back to enjoy their beautiful food in their beautiful patio or dining room. If you live closer to Rice Village, check out their other location there!

Local Foods
See you next week for another culinary adventure!

We love Local Foods! If you ask them for their kids options when you order, they have two or three things 'off menu', like PB&J on pretzel bread and something else, I forget. But mine will also nosh on some of the regular sandwiches and sides too. Great place for families and noisy get-togethers!
