Bones: Skeletons and How They Work by Steve Jenkins – Books for Kids to Read

It’s Felicia! Today’s review is of Bones: Skeletons and How They Work by Steve Jenkins.

Steve Jenkins has done it again. Bones is fun book, full of interesting facts and complete with wonderful illustrations aimed at younger children that will engage older readers as well.

The beginning of the book is devoted to explaining that bones are alive and growing in your body as well as in animal’s bodies while providing support and protecting “delicate internal organs”.

Almost all the bones pictured in this book are actual size and Steve Jenkins cleverly introduces the first bone as a guessing game. “Where does this bone belong?” he writes and on the second page, he shows that it belongs in a human hand, where a collection of 27 bones make it up.

Did you know that a giraffe’s neck is as long as a man is tall and that they both have the same amount of bones in their neck? With his cut paper style illustrations, he explains how some animals have skeletons better for flying, running or hanging.

Jenkins delivers entertaining facts on each page with accurate depictions of each bone that get my girls both excited about science.

The end of the book includes an amazing appendix that covers other interesting tidbits about skeletal systems that comes after an amazing two page pull out spread with all 260 adult human assembled out.

This book, which was a gift, was an immediate hit three years ago and is still a favorite between my daughters!

Go HERE to get it on Amazon. Or better yet, shop local and head to Brazos Bookstore.
