National Geographic Animal Encyclopedia: 2,500 Animals with Maps, Photos and More – Books for Kids to Read

It’s Felicia! Today’s review is of National Geographic Animal Encyclopedia: 2,500 Animals with Photos, Maps, and More!

Oddly enough, my five year old’s favorite bedtime story is her year book. She likes to flip from page to page and read everyone’s name before she goes to bed, so that is why my friend thought this National Geographic Animal Encyclopedia book would be perfect for her.

An encyclopedia has a similar format to a school annual. My daughter also thinks that she is half Mexican, half monkey (sounds like a super power) so she was excited and hoping that she would be able to spot some of her monkey relatives in the book when she received it!

This book was an immediate hit with her! She reads it most nights before bed by herself and stares at the gorgeous, glossy pictures and soaking up the informative text that accompanies each picture. It’s National Geographic. Can you really go wrong with that?  The colorful pages cover a broad spectrum of information. Migration, life cycles, defenses, endangered animals and cute babies are just some of the topics covered in the animal profiles.

Fun facts like, did you know that ‘A group of ducklings is called a brood?’ are sprinkled throughout the pages and there is a wonderful chart that breaks down the differences between homes and habitats! This book is really organized! Also, each animal group is separated first by vertebrates and invertebrates and then even further divided into their appropriate phylum. Each group even gets their own chapter.

My daughter and I really enjoyed this National Geographic book together. I learned that sponge skeleton and my fingernails are made out of the same material and that and that Atlantic Cod make a type of antifreeze to keep their blood from freezing. We had tons of fun reading it. This is a must have for any inquisitive child who loves animals!

Go HERE to it on Amazon. Or better yet, shop local and head to Brazos Bookstore!
