This Plus That: Life’s Little Equations by Amy Krouse Rosenthal – Books for Kids to Read
This book that I am about to review should be on your + list. Literally. This book is full of fancy word equations that most children can easily relate to.
It is also full of fun and whimsy and definitely encourages a love of reading among four and five year olds! Even my older daughter took the time to flip through the book and giggle at a couple of the combinations that she found.
Yes + No =Maybe and Wishes + Frosting = Birthday are two examples of wonderful combinations that Rosenthal selects that always equals a sentiment that a child can relate to or understand.
Some of the equations are easy to spot such as 1+1 = Us, while others take a little more thought, such as Chores/Everyone= Family.
Some of the combinations are educational such as Yellow + Blue= Green. Others make sense after comparison such as Small + Bottle = Baby and Tall + Coffee = Grown-up. Either way, the combinations take us through the day to day lives of two little girls, illustrated by Jen Corace. With their heart shaped faces and expressive eyes, it is easy to see why Blaming +Eye Rolling ≠ Polite but Handshake +”How Are You” does.
I love humorous books that show off word combinations and the power of words in a unique fun way. Also, if you have not noticed, I absolutely love Amy Krouse Rosenthal’s books. All of them. I feel like Amy Krouse Rosenthal + Writing Books= Pure Joy!
