Dogs Don’t Do Ballet by Anna Kemp – Books for Kids to Read

It’s Felicia! Today’s review is of Dogs Don’t Do Ballet by Anna Kemp.

Most dogs wag their tails and play fetch but this irresistible book tells a story of a dog who pines to join his owner at ballet class. Every evening when she leaves to class, she realizes that her dog would love to join her and when she asks her father if her pup can tag along, he dismissively says, “Dogs don’t do ballet.”

As she makes her way to her class, she suspiciously feels as though she is being followed, as if maybe pair of eyes is watching her as she walks through the city to her class. Is it her dog, Biff, who yearns to be a prima donna?

One day, Biff is brave enough interrupt class and show off his jetes and plies only to be humiliated by the instructor, Miss Polly. After his depressing and public dismissal in class, Biff is sad and refuses to eat doggie donuts.

Soon after, Biff’s owner receives tickets to Swan Lake. She would very much like to take her dog with her, but her no nonsense father is exasperated, and says, “How many times do I have to tell you, dogs don’t do ballet.” At the performance, the prima ballerina trips and Biff sees his opportunity to pirouette to his heart’s content and wows the crowd! The dog was surprisingly better than any ballerina there and even the little girl’s father has to admit that.

This book is one of our favorites for so many reasons. One, it is an outstanding tale to approach the topic of stereotypes and misconceptions that people can have about one another. Two, it is perfect story about teaching children that everyone deserves to have a chance to excel at something that they love. Finally, both of my girls always shared this book with their classes at school and this book brought so many smiles to their classmates!
