Bunnicula, A Rabbit Tale of Mystery by Deborah Howe and James Howe – Books for Kids to Read

Are you looking for a Halloween book with an unlikely villain? Well, look no further than this book!

Written by the house dog of the Monroes, Bunnicula: A Rabbit-Tale of Mystery, follows the story of an adorable bunny found at the local theatre during the screening of Dracula.

Upon discovering the bunny in the seat of the theatre, the Monroes bring him to their home and adopt him. Bunnicula, who sleeps all day, does not make much of a household pet  and soon arouses the suspicions of Chester, the well read, suspicious, and slightly neurotic housecat.

Soon after discovering white vegetables with puncture marks, Chester is convinced that the new pet is actually a vampire rabbit and he takes it upon himself to defeat his new nemesis with an unenthusiastic Harold in tow. Hilarity ensues.

There are all sorts of humor in this book and the relationship between Harold and Chester brought many giggles to my girls. There is a part on page72 where Chester attempts to pound a sharp steak into Bunnicula “during the daylight hours, when vampires have no powers”.

Unfortunately, he uses a steak from the grocery store which ruins dinner and earns him a night outside. The Howes also use jokes that kids may not exactly get so if you are reading this book to them at bedtime, you will have a few laughs as well.

The book is 98 pages total and fast paced so it is a quick read. There are two other books in the series and they are just as wonderful as the first. I remember reading them as a kid and absolutely could not wait until I could read them to my children!

Go HERE to get it on Amazon, or better yet, shop local and head to Brazos Bookstore.  If you mention you saw this on BigKidSmallCity, you will get a discount!
