Books for Kids to Read – Howl’s Moving Castle

Felicia here! Today’s book review is of Howl’s Moving Castle! So we just finished this book today and my girls absolutely loved it.

When Sophie Hatter’s father dies, her privileged life at school and home comes to an end. Her stepmother sends her younger two sisters off to seek their fortunes, but keeps Sophie at home to help her run the hat shop.

Sophie is surprisingly talented which angers a local witch that is called the Wicked Witch of the Waste. To eliminate the competition, the witch turns Sophie into an old hag.

In her new form, Sophie’s character grows and she decides to seek her fortune and eventually takes refuge in Howl’s magical castle where he is rumored to eat the souls of young girls.

She convinces him to keep her on as a cleaner and lives on with Howl, a really not so terrible wizard, Calcifur, a fire demon, and Michael, Howl’s sidekick who has the common sense that his master so very obviously lacks.

As Howl looks for love from girl to girl and Sophie investigates  how to break the agreement spell between the fire demon and howl, many plots are tied together in this novel that has many twists and turns that all come together nicely in the end.

The characters are expertly developed and their imperfections draw them close to your heart.

My girls demanded this book to be read every waking moment and we finished it under a month. It has the right amount of sweetness, romance and mystery to keep the reader intrigued! Bonus, after you read the book, you can also watch the movie directed by Hayao Miyazaki.

You will be impressed by all the vibrant colors and beautiful images that he uses!

Go HERE to get the book on Amazon. Or better yet, head to Brazos Bookstore!
