Books for Kids to Read – Esperanza Rising – BigKidSmallCity Book Reviews

This is Felicia and this review is of Esperanza Rising by Pam Munez Ryan.

After reading Esperanza Rising, I am looking forward to reading another book by Pam Munez Ryan. Set in post-revolutionary Mexico, during the time of the Great Depression, Esperanza Rising tells a story that is often overlooked in history classes. It is a beautiful tale of Mexican farm workers living, surviving, struggling, working, and adapting in the United States.

Based somewhat on the life on her grandmother, Ryan writes about Esperanza Ortega, a somewhat spoiled girl who is the daughter of a wealthy ranch owner. Her life changes when her father is killed by bandits and one of her awful uncles tries to marry her widowed mother; when she refuses his proposals, he burns their home down. Esperanza and her mother eventually flee Mexico and join a migrant camp in California and when they do this, they leave her beloved Abuelita behind as well as their privileged lifestyle.

Poverty and prejudice greet Esperanza and her mother in America and she becomes a field worker in this backwards “riches to rags” story.  How does Esperanza cope? What does she do when her mother becomes deathly ill and she has no one? Will Esperanza be able to move forward and adjust to her new life? Read this book and find out!
