Books for Kids to Read – Yo! Yes? – BigKidSmallCity Book Reviews

This is Felicia!   My girls and I love exploring Houston and we love to read.

This review is of Yo! Yes? by Chris Raschka.

This book is handy for teaching how to read using inflecting tones. “Yo! Yes?” in thirty four, single-syllable words the author has managed to tell an interesting story through conversation between two boys that are strangers to each other and then become pals.

I like to pretend to be one boy while my Pre-K daughter pretends to be the other; then we switch. She is not practicing how to read sentences with this book, but she is learning how to adjust her tone when question marks and exclamation points are presented. Every time we read this book together, my girls give it their utmost and complete attention.

A complaint that I have heard about this book is that the African American little boy uses the word “Yo” while the Caucasian little boy uses the word “Yes”. I was not offended by it mainly due to the fact my Hispanic little girls both use the words “Yo” and “Yes” and sometimes “Arriba, arriba, andale, andale!” after watching Looney Tunes. If the use of “Yo!” by a minority bothers you, check out Ring! Yo? It’s the same concept, but not nearly as sweet in my opinion.

Go HERE to find the book on Amazon.  Or, better yet, shop local and head to Brazos Bookstore.  If you mention you saw this review on BigKidSmallCity, you will get a discount… and get to read the book immediately!
