Books for Kids to Read – This Is San Francisco By Miroslav Sasek– BigKidSmallCity Book Reviews

This is Felicia! My girls and I love exploring Houston and we love to read.   Everywhere we go, we have a book with us.

This review is of This is San Francisco by Miroslav Sasek.

This new edition, of a long out of print children’s classic, is part of a series that includes New York, Australia, Rome and many other popular, geographical places. It even includes the Moon.  My daughter’s 1st grade teacher is dying to get a set of her own.

The book starts off by divulging information on how San Francisco came to life during the Gold Rush of 1849 and was later destroyed by an earthquake in 1906, but was rebuilt within 3 years. Along with interesting claims such as, San Franciscans believe that their city is built on forty two hills, to the retro pictures of the Japanese Tea Garden and other attractions; this book is certainly filled with informative facts about the city.

I am sure that you know that the Golden Gate Bridge at sixty five stories high, is one of San Francisco’s prides, but did you know it was painted that iconic, rust, orange color because it is the hue best visible in heavy fog? The book is absolutely littered with these sorts of facts. Another plus for me was that on the last page, there is another list with the updates of changes that have been made in San Francisco since the books original publishing date.

My brother lives in San Francisco, so my kids were super excited to read about this particular city. Pleased with all the beautiful illustrations in This is San Francisco, along with all the information packed in, I have decided that the very next book on my shopping list is Miroslav Sasek’s book This is the Way to the Moon.
